J&FJ Baker Brown Russian Calf
One of the first shoes that I ever fell in love with was a pair of vintage Florsheim Imperial longwings in (black pebble grain leather) that I bought at a thrift shop for $5. I wore those anywhere and everywhere until the leather soles were just about worn through. When I saw Nathan’s boots start to pop up on the scene, I thought, wow, those look excellent! And he’s a Florsheim? Intriguing… And he’s based in the Midwest?? Better yet. (I’m from Michigan and still very much love the Midwest.) A spot opened up in Nathan’s books, and i jumped at the chance. I went with Baker’s Russian Calf to recapture past glory of my vintage pebble grain imperials, and also the story of that leather is so nerdy and insane. What’s not to love? (I also hot married not far from Colyton in a town in Devon called Ilfracombe…) My Miltons have weathered exuberant tourism on my first trip to Japan, railroad closing rains in Northern England and Scotland, hours upon hours at the dog park with my micro mini sheepadoodle puppy, and a constant choir of “yo what are those??? those boots are awesome…” from strangers near and far. This Baker’s Russian calf is unyielding in a fantastic way. It has a really subtle pullup, and has darkened ever so slightly near the welt. It’s been an absolute pleasure to spend the last 6 months in my Miltons. Looking forward to next year’s Dome already!
