Although lighter colored boots patinate more dramatically, I chose black boots for this run because I'd be able to wear them to work, where black shoes are required. That way, I'd be sure to maximize the amount of time I could put good wear into them. I was drawn to the waxed leather because it'd give more character to the patination than a solid black boot. I really liked the prominent toe for a Viberg 310-like shape and the stark white contrast stitching on the double stitchdown welt.
Ordering this pair on Instagram from Cheng was a breeze and a delight. Cheng is such a nice, cool guy. Very easy to work with and very accommodating. I got to make a friend while ordering my boots. Sizing was super simple, just a half size down from Brannock. They fit perfectly when I got them.
Most of my time wearing these boots was spent at work. I work in a casino, so not a terribly rough environment; carpeted or polished floors.. But they worked very well there. They easily stood out from most folks' shoes because of the very noticeable solid construction and detail. I was asked about them many times. I was happy to tell everyone about our welted wear community and the Patina Thunderdome! Other than work, we went on many a hike and park visits with the kids, backyard fires in the firepit. They handle wet asphalt like nobody's business. Definitely were my go-to for grocery store runs, especially on rainy days.
Having a waxed smooth leather boot was like having automatic shoe polish. A simple brushing, and it brought out a nice shine like I had polished them. I always do an initial conditioning with new pairs of footwear, so these were very wearable right out of the gate. The bullhide is a tough but flexible leather. The break-in was very quick. I was expecting a high contrast fading of the wax, but it wore more evenly like a pair of vintage faded indigo jeans. The leather's color was struck through, so there was no tea-coring as they got nicks and scratches.
I really like the design and construction of these boots. The sprung toe not only gives ample room inside but has a vintage charm and esthetic. The construction is solid! Not one loose stitch, on the uppers and outsole stitching. The only issue I had was that I did buy insoles to use. Maybe it's those polished floors in the casino I work in, but I really needed more cushion.
Great in wet and slippery conditions. Better than Dainite soles any day.
I really enjoyed this pair. Very versatile. They went with any outfit I'd put together for fall and winter, indoors and outdoors. I would definitely recommend Ironboots USA to everyone. Great experience. Great value.
