ASHM Last: 8
I tried the 7 1/2 and my big toenail was constantly in contact with the leather so I went for size 8
L'Atelier Monsieur
I use them as an everything boot. Mostly in the office but also for walks outside, going out in the city and mushroom hunting. Truth be told, I won't use them for renovation or construction work. I had them on in heavy rain and they kept my feet mostly dry except the place where it bends the most. We've had a few freezing mornings and I didn't have a problem with thick socks. In the office, I get sweaty feet from time to time when it is too warm.
Initially, when I got them, they were squeaking with every step, which was quite annoying. Because of the stiffness, I wanted to help the break-in with a little neatsfoot oil and waxy conditioner. That also helped with the squeaking. Other than that, I cleaned them with saddle soap once and reconditioned them with the waxy conditioner once the squeaking came back. The leather has developed a bunch of creases by now and has also darkened a little where the shoe is bending. The tongue also has dark spots where the laces are rubbing against it.
Im happy with the fit, I have a little wiggle room for my toes. The ASHM last is wide enough for me. The only thing I had to get used to was the feel under foot, which was quite hard, but now that I have worn them for quite some time (basically every day) my feet got used to it. My heel got rubbed open once while walking a pretty steep hill, other then that, no problems. I had thick socks in the beginning, but now thinner socks are ok too.
For the price, it's the best quality you can get, I would say. It's a no-nonsense boot that is made to withstand whatever you throw at it. It looks good enough for me to wear it in the office, but I is tough enough to go do anything else I'd say. Other than a little nick on the laces and the ends of the threads from the stitchdown construction being frayed (no problem for me), there is nothing to complain about.
The grip on wet tiles is a little slippery. They seem very soft and wear is already starting to show mainly on the heel part. Time will tell how they hold up. Due to me not being used to a higher heel, going up and down stairs was weird. The softness of the sole helps with the hardness under foot.
Overall it is a great value boot I would recommend to everyone who wants a rugged boot that can do almost everything while still looking good enough for most occasions. It has pros and cons, but for me, the pros outweigh the cons.
