Nicks Handmade Boots
These boots were my do anything, go anywhere, conquer all companions. I wore them daily on my commercial construction site. They helped me complete numerous projects around the house—outdoor play area for my daughter, boulder and landscape rock placement, bathroom remodel, and other small tasks. They handled dirt, mud, snow, ice with ease. Mud was easily brushed off once dry. The lug sole didn’t give up the mud so easily though. Comfortable to wear on nearly every surface, be it concrete, asphalt, wood subfloors, gypcrete, etc. The DomePros even held their own hiking in Colorado and Illinois.
The 64 Tan started off as a creamy light tan, almost like birch wood. It was a pretty tough break-in. No blisters or anything, but it took some time to ease up and develop flex points. It’s an extremely resilient leather. It really hides scuffs, scratches, and scrapes. After conditioning and being exposed to the Colorado sun daily, the boots developed a really nice caramel color. It is rich in tone but not dark. I mainly stuck to brushing for care. I did have to saddle soap them fairly early on after getting blood and pus on them. After the soap, I used Smiths. I only used that once, and a little Bick 4 a few months later. The patina started with the folds on the shaft. Eventually those (and the backstrap) started to pick up dye from my jeans, which I think looks really nice. The outside of the vamp seemed to show its experiences even sooner than the toe.
Overall, the fit and comfort are very good. Toe box is a little snug, but not horribly so. Arch support is great. Classic height dogger heel is very comfortable for nearly anything. I wear full cushion socks and they pair well with the boots. I have added a leather insole from Nicks. Took some work to mitigate squeaking, but eventually body powder did the trick.
Very good fit and finish. One small blemish between the leather midsole and rubber outsole at the toe, but it’s nothing crazy. Quality components.
Great traction. Comfortable on numerous surfaces. Not too loud. Does tend to track mud. Doesn’t wear out super quickly.
Comfortable and durable. Great traction.
If I were to do it again, I would probably go with an 8” height rather than 10”. I’m still glad I tried the 10” though. It really is a beast, so I’m glad I have them.
