I really enjoy my 10" logger boots, but for the type of work I do I don't necessarily need a 10" boot...or a logger boot. I just like the style and fit. This boot is in the same style as the Whites LTT Smokejumper but it's only 7" tall. It's more flexible with the CXL leather, half sole, and overall a much lighter boot. Perfect for my needs as a UPS driver without sacrificing the things I like in a logger boot. UPS requires drivers to wear a brown/black boot with a leather upper and this boot fits those requirements.
Initially Frank's helped me size a pair of Patriots on the 55 and those fit great. So I just ordered the same size as those. It's the same size that I take in the 4811 lasted Smokejumpers.
Ordered them online from Division Road Inc. These boots were more expensive than any other boots I've bought and clicking the buy button was a struggle. Exhilarating, felt like I did something wrong. Haha. The ordering process was simple enough and Division Road followed up with a phone call to confirm sizing. I was really surprised to get that phone call actually. I really appreciated their desire to make sure I got the correct size. Shipped UPS signature required. Arrived quickly and packaged well.
I wore this pair primarily for work as a UPS package car driver. 📦 I did wear them to church on the weekends every once in a while and did a couple hikes in Forest Park. Portland is a pretty wet city in the winter so they saw a lot of rainy days and puddle jumping. They spent most of their time in SE Portland neighborhoods. My supervisor crunched a few numbers for me and found that I *average* around 3500 deliveries/pickups a month. That breaks down to about 175 stops a day, some days more, some days less...depending on the time of year and route. These boots were on my feet for most of those deliveries. They did get a short break during the snow/ice storm...needed to bust out the V100 soled boots for those days. These boots have almost pure package car driver patina. 😂 In and out of the truck, driving from stop to stop, organizing/selecting packages in the back and making the deliveries. 🤙
I didn't do much to care for the waxed flesh portion of these boots. Wiped them down with a wet rag when they were dirty, but for the most part just let the leather do its thing. I didn't condition the waxed flesh with anything. It's been durable and has kept my feet dry in the rainy weather we have here. I was hoping it would have shown more of the lighter nap under the wax, but it seems to have burnished back down rather than rub off. Still happy with it though, it's just the nature of the environment they were in. Break in was quick and was comfortable almost immediately.
The natural CXL has really changed a lot and has held up great. It's very comfortable and breaking in the uppers was quick. I was able to wear them for a full day of work immediately without much discomfort. After a couple days, they were good to go. I absolutely love how the leather has changed over the last 6 months. Different shades of brown and some darker brown shadowy looking areas. Im not sure how else to describe it, so here goes nothin... The leather takes a little piece of everything it comes into contact with as a memento of where it's been. It has been awesome watching it transform into something unique to how I use my boots. I can say these are "my" boots because of the change in the natural CXL uppers. They are well on their way to having the same "soul" that I see in some vintage boots. I'm absolutely thrilled with that, but they could use another decade of wear though. 😂 When they were dirty I wiped them down with a wet rag. The natural CXL was brushed (horsehair) everyday after work and I used a very small amount of Smith's leather balm a couple times. Mostly, just a lot of brushing to manage scuffs and scrapes.
After break-in these boots are crazy comfortable. They fit my feet so well now that I forget I'm wearing a logger style boot. The arch support is great and has been good for my lower back and knees. I put a lot of steps in everyday and my feet are not tired at the end of the day. My heel is cupped well without any heel slip and my toes have enough space in the toe box without feeling too big. Highly recommend the 55 last.
The design is a classic and the Whites logger will never go out of style in my opinion. Division Road and Whites did a great job putting this make up together, it looks great. Construction is solid, but I did have a few user caused issues. Going up steps every once in a while I'll catch my left toe on the step and the sole starts to separate. Also had a couple stitches on the heel counter (triple stitched) break after rubbing up against the driver's seat as I got out of the truck. I did use a little contact cement to secure the toe and heel counter to prevent continued damage. They've held up and aren't falling apart though. Fairly normal wear and tear for a work boot. IMO The stitching looks pretty clean and even. There were some loose stitches that popped up near the eyelets during break-in that were quickly fixed with a lighter. The hand sewn welt stitching looks well done and secure. All antique brass eyelets have held up well. None are deformed or pulling out. These boots are built well and I'm sure they'll be around for many more years to come.
I'm really impressed with this half sole. I didn't think it would last the full 6 months and it has! There isn't much life left in it, but it's not totally worn out. Provided plenty of traction in the rainy weather we have. I stayed on my feet all winter and it has performed well on a variety of surfaces. The heels have a little more life left in them, but I walk with some heel drag and they could stand to be changed at this point. Overall it's been great.
Highly recommend the Whites LTT Logger style boot. It looks great, durable, well made and comfortable. I can't ask for much more than that in a work boot.
